May 12, 2016: Considering the rising “Geriatric Population” in India, there is acute need for trained manpower who can provide quality care to senior citizens. Now in most of the families for various reasons the elders are left alone to take care of themselves. There is a growing demand for geriatric care staff for the Oldage Homes, Home nursing and geriatric wards in hospitals, or community based care facilities. The School of Vocational Education at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, offers a one year Diploma in Geriatric Care. This is offered with the help of our hub partners in different locations across India. It is presently offered in 14 locations across India, they are – Anand, Belgaum, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Bijapur, Calicut, Delhi, Guwahati, Indore, Kolkata, Mangalore, Mumbai, Pune and Trivandrum.

Geriatric Care course consists of skill based education through work integrated training leading to professionally qualified geriatric care cadre of workers. Course curriculum is designed in a such a way that 60% weight-age is given to on the job training and 40% weight-age on classroom coaching. Any student who has completed Standard 10th or equivalent level of qualification is eligible to join this programme. There is no upper age limit for admission. Students shall be trained on professional basis to cater to the medical, physical, social, emotional and financial needs of the growing number of senior citizens in the society.

Undertaking this course will enable the students to have better employment opportunities as they will receive training in assessing condition of the service user, learn various aspects of geriatric care, deal with emergencies and understand different health issues related to geriatric age group. On completion of Diploma in Geriatric care, students/trainees are professionally qualified to join in a hospital, health care center, nursing homes, hospices, home care services, multipurpose center and other such agencies that deal directly with the older persons.
